Zugzwang

Zugzwang happens when any move a player can make will only make their position worse.

One player is put at a disadvantage because of their obligation to make a move; a player is considered to be «in zugzwang» when any legal move will worsen their position.

The fact that the player to move is obliged (forced) to make a move is the very core of many aspects of chess.
