Opposition

A king can control the opponent’s king by taking opposition. This happens when the kings face each other with one square in between. The player to move must then step aside or backward.

Gaining opposition doesn’t win the game by itself, but in many situations, it’s an effective tool on the path to victory (or holding a draw).
